Sometimes things just work out. When Gil Gibori and Ami Das became candidates for the four open seats on Avoca’s School Board, we set out to recruit the best write-in candidates to join them. We are proud to announce that Dan Seals and Sarah Balassa have joined the team! Together they bring the critical skills and experience that Avoca deserves. Like we said, sometimes things just work out.
Avoca has proven to be the leader of our township in the struggle to balance safe schools and virtual learning. The school board, administration, and teachers have redefined collaboration in their selfless, creative, and tireless work to serve each student during this unprecedented year. Our leadership and staff worked together, unified in their mission to keep our students and faculty safe, supported, and achieving our goals. We will lead the new school board in continuing to provide the resources and space to allow our professionals to sustain the incredible level of achievement we have enjoyed in light of this global disaster.
Sarah Balassa joined the Winnetka Zoning Board to help lead the effort to block the effort by some residents to separate from our district. Additionally, Gil Gibori supported our former superintendent in his efforts to modify state legislation to prevent any kind of redistricting. Keeping Avoca unified is a priority for our entire team. Our unique ability to draw families from different towns emphasizes the special nature of our community. The Avoca Coalition maitinanis this value as a key priority.
Avoca has always been a lighthouse district. We pioneered how personal technology could enhance students' learning and readiness by being the first 1-to-1 laptop district in Illinois. Due to fiscal struggles and other challenges, Avoca's spirit for innovation waned. Our students continue to succeed, our teachers are exceptional in their skills and determination, but our facilities and initiatives lost their spark. Avoca continues to be one of the most attractive districts for any teacher, allowing us to have the choice of the best educators in the country. We owe it to them and our administration to provide the latitude and culture to innovate, experiment, and even fail. With new leadership, Avoca has begun the drive in this direction. As members of the school board, we will provide the fuel for Avoca to truly become a leader in innovative education once again.
We will remain committed to prudent and strategic financial planning and investment to maximize the educational potential of our students. Fiscal diligence and discipline are paramount for ensuring success today and securing sustainable excellence for our schools. Our schools are our primary tool to build a better future for our community. We will continue to foster the value of prudent spending for exceptional outcomes. 80 percent of our constituents do not have students in our schools. These are the residents who trust us with their taxes to not only educate the children of their neighbors, but strengthen the value of their homes and the quality of our public assets. As board members, we are focused on their priorities as well as those of our school families.
We will work to make Avoca 37 an inclusive environment where all students can feel comfortable, accepted, and ready to learn. This is not about creating a warm, fuzzy feeling for students. Inclusion builds confidence. Confidence supports learning. Being the most diverse among the New Trier Township districts, we leverage inclusion and a focus on the Whole Child to produce, by every measure, the most successful students to enter New Trier. Our students grow up in a unique community ready to succeed anywhere in the world. Prioritizing this balance will continue to enhance the value of living in our district.
